Message Board MONTHLY (daily)

One of the people leaving a comment also made a good point - this practice (ignoring inflation etc when presenting figures about money) is also why every single year at least one movie "smashes box office records". What a bunch of mugs we are for believing all that tripe.
John
Sat Nov 22 07:34:28 2008

Sorry "current national debt" should read "current national deficit".
John
Sat Nov 22 07:25:52 2008

I very much enjoyed this article on BBC news debunking all this manure spouted by the conservatives about that nice Mr. Brown taking the country into "record debt". In a nutshell, if you put the current national debt in context of GDP, it is currently hovering somewhere around 3.5%. Back in 1993 that figure was more like 7%. I also very much enjoyed the point that 2008 is a "record high year number", the highest since records began over 2000 years ago.

Agreed. I thought the whole point of the 'losing the emotions' bit was because the Vulcans were such an inherently violent race that the only way to control their emotions was total abstinence.
tom
Fri Nov 21 17:12:59 2008

Oh yeah I agree there, spock is definitely the black cat and the tabby is Kirk. Still, I reckon Spock would still zap ya given half a chance :)
Kev
Fri Nov 21 15:59:02 2008

Kev: YEs but here we are talking mean cat against black cat!! I think that black cat was Spock and the other cat was a Klingorn or something... THERE! :D
Lox
Fri Nov 21 15:32:11 2008

I am not sure about that Lox, I think he would be pretty quick "zap your ass" if it meant he could do his "needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" speech :D :D
Kev
Fri Nov 21 14:46:03 2008

John: Wasn't Spok against violence altogether?
Lox
Fri Nov 21 14:04:49 2008

...oh and the tabby cat is clearly Spock, being the agressor and all. the black cat appears to be acting purely in self defence.
John
Fri Nov 21 13:18:46 2008

Lox/Simon - you did have the sound turned on when you watched Star Trek cats didn't you?
John
Fri Nov 21 13:17:07 2008

Hmmm no I still prefer the cats. DOO DOO DOO DOO DOO DO DUH DER DER DER DER!
John
Fri Nov 21 13:15:28 2008

Simon has got a point, Charlie the Unicorn is clearly MUCH better than gay cats... I wonder who ever thought of that cartoon... A GENIUS!
Lox

Wed Nov 19 23:42:08 2008

Fortunately Tim, 150 calories every 20 minutes is also more or less the amount you burn off by sitting still doing nothing. 20 minutes of cycling will burn off an *additional* 150 calories, i.e. 300 in total for that twenty minute period. So instead of doing exercise you could just sit still for a long time. Thankfully as software engineers we do a lot of that (sitting still doing almost nothing) so, err, it is perfectly fine for us to eat lots of Jaffa Cakes.
John
Wed Nov 19 23:15:56 2008

Wed Nov 19 21:40:22 2008

Sorry to hear about your sinus pain Tom. Would a Jaffa Cake cheer you up?
dsp
Wed Nov 19 21:33:02 2008

Yes, but these are not ordinary Jaffa Cakes. They's Cadbury's Jaffa Cakes, that must be a few extra minutes of cycling. Quite amazingly, even though it is hours later I still have 16 out of 24 left. By your formula, that's (24 - 16) * 20 = 8 * 20 = 160 minutes = 2 and a bit hours of cycling to do (do you like how I showed my working out). Fortunately I have been thinking very hard for literally hours so should eat some more.

John: 1000 words per day is pretty manageable. 5000 is pushing it. Add in days where you might not have an easy time starting (that's not a problem for me when I'm on the hunt though) and days when you're working a lot and it's quite difficult. In fact, it would probably be quite unhealthy to invest the time on some days.

I am suddenly quite interested in this nanowrimo thing - if only I had paid more attention before I headed off to New York, I'd have had at least a few hours on the plane either way with nothing better to do. I don't really have much of a feeling for how big 50,000 words is - how manageable is that in what is left of November?

Just left Tunisia, now enroute to Spain. It's a tough life, ....... About the only down side to this trip is that when we are at sea there is no mobile telephone link, and when we are in port it's just so busy, or the wrong time to call, ie too early or too late. Still Spain on Friday, so should be able to use the phone then. Also, its only 38p a minute from Europe. I hear its a bit cold in England, must check the BBC weather site.

In summary, you should buy new clothes whilst on business trips. It's a nice souvenir, and you can probably even expense it (particularly given that a reasonably priced t-shirt probably costs less than a typical hotel laundry bill).
John
Wed Nov 12 11:56:17 2008

I hear you on the running out of clean clothes issue - I bought a t-shirt in a pizza place towards the end of my trip because I was running out of stuff to wear. It happens to also be quite a nice t-shirt.
John

Lox

I should note, of course, that I'm hopeful for one of two things to happen: Obama will be successful and that will be good or he'll not be successful and the fiscally conservative, socially (moderately) liberal people (like me) will find a candidate in office friendly to them for once.
Travis
Fri Nov 7 23:12:57 2008

Rob: Some doubts, in brief: nearly every economist says that Obama's plans are untenable; while I support ENFORCING the present tax code (something that's not being done), plans to redistribute the wealth in a way that goes much further than redressing a wrong is simply immoral; his withdrawal plan for Iraq is probably impractiable; then when he withdraws the troops, he wants to send them to Afghanistan and increase US military stationed in the US by about 85,000. I'm left wondering how we can do all that.

Rob: I didn't vote for McCain, but I would have preferred him to Obama. I can't lie. I voted third party, as I said I would. It's time for a truly financially conservative party that is socially liberal, in my mind. Thus, the Libertarians got my vote.

Hello chaps - exciting isn't it? I'm here in New York and absolutely nobody is talking about the election whatsoever. Hmmm. I bought a Obama / Biden campaign badge today, and wore it on my way to the office. The looks I got from people were all very much "you're preaching to the converted", well I guess this is New York.

Lox, yeah, had forgot about that. Comedy. T-Boy, I hope you didn't vote for the old fart - the stress of being Mr P. will kill him. Leaving you with a Barbie. In fact, I'd rather have a Barbie - an empty piece of plastic is less dangerous than 'Dinosaurs lived alongside humans' woman.

I think that Rob got it spot on, and I hope that T-boy made the right decision by voting Obama. I secretly hope that John manages to sneak in and vote Obama too, it shouldn't be too hard after he saw me doing it ten years ago in the UK for Blair...

Dear America,
We, the rest of the world, know you're inherently right wing and that your idea of socialism isn't a welfare state but tax breaks for unemployed merchant bankers. We understand that the idea of socialism is scarey because it doesn't fit with Capitalism, Democracy or the American Dream. When voting at the polls, please do remember that both your candidates are further right than Thatcher and the Republicans are further right than Hitler. You'll never get to the middle ground, so please at least choose the one that has a picture of the middle ground on his wall, Obama.

Because if you choose the coffin dodger and his brainless tartlet then we, the world, are royally, royally fucked.

Thank you, the World.

Just come back from the first mandatory stroll in Shinjuku... I really love this place!!! As for your night I can see that you like dangerous places!! :D

(for completeness sake, the other two places I went to were (A) a slightly disappointing Mexican restaurant - I guess the West Coast is better for this sort of thing - and (B) a sort of cocktail bar place, wherein all the staff were incredibly gay)

Aaaaah Loxy I am jealous. With all the options I had available to me in New York this evening, one of the places I went to was a Japanese Izakaya, which made me think if I have to be outside of the UK, my favourite place is definitely Japan.
